Long Distance frequency reduction in Fall??
Author: GenePoon

A reliable source affiliated with Amtrak reports that Amtrak management has plans to reduce frequencies of the long distance trains in the Fall. Both 5-weekly and triweekly operation are under consideration. Some trains may retain daily operation over part of their routes such as the Texas Eagle, Chicago-St. Louis (presumably dropping "Texas") and the Empire Builder St. Paul-Chicago, which could be supplemented by the proposed MSP-CHI corridor coach train (but can it be implemented by then? Do CP and Metra know?)

Not set in stone yet and I would be pleased to see this NOT happen, but with the Corridor Clowns in charge, don't be surprised. Not a peep from the peanut gallery (NARP/RPA), either, though if it doesn't happen and they claim part of the credit, i'd be pleased with that, too..

Let's start a lobbying campaign to reduce NEC operation to one train a day, three days a week.

They will be in defiance if the law if they do it again. Don't tell me the people they hired to run daily service was summer grad school help.

I had also heard this, but the reason given was that so much equipment has been allowed to fall into disrepair that there is not enough to cover daily schedules.

It takes just as much equipment to run 5 days a week as 7 days.
Amazing, they still manage to run 8 car Regionals. 5 car Keystones, 5 car Downeasters, and 5-6 car Empires.
Never let a good crisis go to waste.

Very disappointing news.  Funny, I just rejoined NARP/ARP so I can see timetables.  Not having timetables is a disgrace and reveals Amtrak's airline mentality.  Since many American schools don't teach geography I wonder if many Amtrak riders have no idea where they are on their journeys?

Given the lack of Wifi on most LD trains, and crappy internet coverage this country has in the hinterlands, their Smartphone's Google map would not be of much use either.

If you read last weeks hotline and put it together with some from the past month RPA is in on this (and doing nothing). Last week RPA said to expect changes with the new Congress. In previous weeks RPA stated Amtrak claims it needs 3 billion alone for the network that number is insane and fraudulent,  so far Congress has only approved a healthy and record level 1.6 billion for the network next fiscal year starting 10/1. So there's managements and RPAs cover. Amtrak will claim they won't have the funding to run daily service. RPA is a puppet for Amtrak at this point they refuse to cross Gardners path...

Anderson killed the AAA discount. He left the NARP discount in place to retain them as a puppet and PR outfit.
Gardner's Amtrak will play the victim card as long as they can get away with it.

United is doing the same thing.,.,.but when you only have 1 train a day you can't do that

you cannot use airline strategy on the railroad , then what furlough employees, play the never ending game

There's a lot being said in this thread.  What do you mean by "the same thing" with respect to United?

They did in 2020 and many did not come back. Many of the pilots that were furlohed from the airlines in 2020 are now flying cargo for Prime Air, UPS and FedEx.

This is wholly inaccurate.  No pilots were furloughed from United in 2020.  A good number did receive furlough notices, but did not actually get furloughed because of government subsidies meant to prevent furloughs.

There was also a Letter of Agreement (LOA) negotiated between the pilots and company which was meant to keep the airline in a "snapback status" in expectation of returning passenger demand as COVID shutdowns eased.

How could "NARP/RPA" issue a "peep" over a policy that has not been, and hopefully never will be, announced? Should "NARP/RPA" issue pronouncements over every rumor and future prediction that comes along?
