The San Joaquin I rode back in June of this year from Emeryville to Bakersfield had one behind the locomotive with the rest (5 cars) being bi-level cars.

Last Wednesday I went for a walk in Jack London Square, Train 715 came in from Bakersfield and had the Comet Cars.

Is this still the case, even though the May 2022 timetable says there's a
=13.3333px"Cafe Car featuring premium sandwiches,
=13.3333pxsalads and snacks, plus local, domestic
=13.3333pxand imported beer, wine and cocktails"    ?

Do the California car trainsets have a cafe car and just the comet sets don't?

answered my own question this morning, thanks to having to switch from hours late Starlight to San Joaquin #710 (double-level cars),   There is a cafe car, but fewer menu choices than pre-COVID.    Quite a come-down from the meals in the diningcar I was looking forward to today!
