Amtrak has 4,000 job openings!
Author: amtrakbill

I received this (below) on LinkedIn from an Amtrak recruiter. 4000 jobs sounds daunting and it’s going to be a long time before things are restored to pre-pandemic levels.
——————————————————-
We’re hiring! #Amtrak has more than 4,000 positions available including engineering, project management, finance, technology, electrical, and many more. A recent bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act is providing a record $66 billion, which will deliver the greatest level of investment in Amtrak and infrastructure since Amtrak was founded 50 years ago.

If you are someone looking for your next opportunity in your career. Follow these steps below:

1. Check out Amtrak's careers website --> careers.amtrak.com
2. Search "Keywords. E.g., Project Management and/or Engineering" into the keywords field, add your desired work location, and click search.
3. Review our open roles and submit your application.

Below are some jobs we're currently hiring for. If you don't see a role open today, set up an alert using keywords related to the role(s) you're looking for so you can receive emails when those roles are available. We will continue to have positions open throughout this year and next.

They've been looking for 4,000 people for nearly a year now. I don't think this is the most updated statistic about the 4,000 jobs as Amtrak has touted that line for a while now, and has even said they've hired something like nearly 3,000 folks against the 4,000. Not saying they don't have a staff shortage, just perhaps an updated statistic?

They may still have 4000 openings after hiring 3000 as they may only be keeping up with attrition

Too bad the recent 15,000 victims of Musk's and Zuckerberg's stupidity aren't qualified for any of these crafts, though I am sure any of them could be hired to prepare systemwide pdf timetables and have them produced in a few weeks.

And adding those timetables to the website and app, and then addressing the numerous shortcomings of the website, and even some issues with the app, such as when you are checking on train status frequently it forgets what day it is.  BSB

For years you have been posting caustic commentary about Amtrak  If Amtrak is as bad as you say it is, why would people who previously worked for Twitter (or anywhere else) consider working for Amtrak, even to work on assignments such as pdf timetables?

Because they got bills to pay and Gardner is not Musk.

Haha. (not laughing at you) Maybe they already know who Gardner is.

Even slacker tech workers need outside inspiration, and Gardner is definitely NOT that.

While the Twitter purge is not typical Silicon Valley, Facebook is. When a project fails, attrition starts. It's not bad enough where Zuck has to resign in shame, but the real success story behind Facebook already resigned earlier this summer.

If the employees are crying, this is the time to learn - the pandemic babysitting is over.

Other firms in Silicon Valley are doing the same, including Cisco, which specifically and accurately described the reason. It's the "5% list" I often talk about here on TO. I've survived a few, and not survived a few.

Very few laid off tech workers look to blue collar jobs right away. Usually, they resort to traditional temp jobs (food, clerical, retail) first. I've talked to quite a few ex-tech workers who ended up in the travel & leisure industry. I don't include Amtrak in that industry although they SHOULD belong there. Anyway, it's unrealistic for Amtrak to expect any windfalls from the tech layoffs anytime soon.

Let's start with the most obvious reason first - all of Amtraks technology positions are in Washington D.C.

You're implying that Amtrak is where those who are desperate for work go because they cannot find work elsewhere.

Musk sets the bar very low.  But from what I recall in your previous posts about, Gardner would not be what employees would want in a CEO, either.

There are a lot of tech workers in Washington DC...
