MassDOT seeking $108 million to improve Inland Route
Author: twropr

Supposedly gets passenger max speed up from 60 to 80 MPH Worcester-Springfield
and returns two Boston-Springfield-NY Inland Route trains to this route.  Already has cab signals.

Inland Route Regional trains were cuts made during the David Gunn era.It woud be interesting to see how they would schedule the two new trains. I suppose two exising Springfield Shuttles trains extended to run Boston - New York and beyond.

I probably wouldn't count on the inland Regionals being restored until the mid to late 2020s or even until the brand new ICTs get accepted to revenue service. There is still a crew shortage so Amtrak can't run the pre-pandemic Northeast Regional schedule yet. The market is certainly there for Amtrak's Inland Services to be reinstated. It would benefit people traveling from Boston to Springfield, Framingham to Windsor as well as Worcester to NYC. On the former Boston & Albany, having 80 mph speeds is important to ensure that the train trip between Boston and NYC and any intermediate station is comparable with driving or taking the bus. It's possible that in the beginning, the inland route trains might only run as far south as New Haven given that a lot of infrastructural improvements on the New Haven Line have to be worked on-replacements of many of the river crossings.
