Amtrak #4 January 24 Backup Move
Author: fredstout

After departing LaPlata this morning, #3 returned 30 or so minutes later in a backup move. The engines were stopped at the depot and a crowd gathered t the second sleeper. No emergency vehicles. After a short stay the train left. Does anyone know what happened?

On VRF there was a comment that there was an incident east of La Plata.

Sounds like a prudent move by Amtrak / BNSF.The

At the platform, able to walk dogs, get food delivery, connect to buses if needed, etc.

UberEats in La Plata? That's a hoot! I mean they could walk to Casey's if they were going to be there for well over an hour.

May be a new scenario with Amtrak when they have a problem. Back up to the nearest village or town so people can abandon ship much quicker and get on with their travels.

"Abandon ship" in La Plata, MO? Ever been there? Pleasant little town, but no alternative public transportation, unless you want to thumb a ride on US 63 south to Columbia, where there is an airport served by American.

Still, if this represents a policy change, and if feasible (may not always be possible) by Amtrak and partner railroads, it makes sense and is a positive step. It allows for a pet walk and smoking and fresh air stop for passengers, the possibility of food and other supplies to be brought on board if needed, and for a safe detraining location if passengers do want to leave the train for alternate transport or for an Amtrak-provided bus substitution.

Good move by Amtrak and BNSF.

There is also an airport a few miles North in Kirksville, but it would take a few planes to cover a full Amtrak train.

No one actually left the train and there were no deliveries. As reported there was a group of people around the second sleeper but there were no visible emergency vehicles.
