Beech Grove, Amtrak is alive and well...I guess
Author: Woodman

I just went to a train show in Beech Grove and decided to drive around the Beech Grove shops.  Some things stand out.  Amtrak has moved most of their Super Liners from the back yard to the North side and front south side of the shops.  A lot of the engines have been moved to the north front.  With so many Super Liners looking good, one would think they could set a priority and get them ready to go back into service.  Also I saw a totally burn out Super Liner, but I could not if it was a coach or maybe a lounge car.  What happened to it and when? Can anyone help?

"Amtrak has moved most of their Super Liners from the back yard to the North side and front south side of the shops."

Anyone with working knowledge of BG know if that's a good sign or just readjusting deck chairs?

Good question - thanks. I would wonder about the meaning of these moves as well. Fingers and toes crossed that it means that those Superliners are going into the shop for repair / rebuild / refurbishment soon. They are really needed - yesterday! The sleepers especially.

Those of you with any insight into things at Beech Grove, please keep us posted. Thanks in advance for doing so.

Amtrak said a few months ago that it was shutting down one of its two work lines at Beech Grove. The result would a more efficient process, and more output.

Maybe this movement of cars means they are starting work on cars again?

There has been a major project to rebuild all of the yard tracks in the Northest quadrant of their facility where a lot of the out-of-service cars have been stored for many years.  This is at last one reason why most of the cars have been moved from those tracks - at least until the work is finished.

Perhaps from the June 2011 wreck of #5 in Nevada. Must still have some salvageable parts.

The transition sleeper 39013 and coach 34033 were heavily damaged in the fire and likely scrapped nearby. Coach 35006 suffered heavy fire damage to its interior.

Or they're waiting for the legal games to finish. Appeals and such take time, lots of time.

This brings to mind an accident litigation in Oregon involving a BN green  Alco RS3.   The Alco had to be repainted back to  its NP livery,  as that was the livery on  the locomotive when the accident took place.  So we all had a 'heritage' unit in a world of green.   TO's FT could add more to this  story and probably has a photo.

When you have an accident with a rental car, the company demands "loss of use" payments for as long as it takes to get the vehicle repaired.

Amtrak could collect a bundle of money from all the gate runners, etc it encounters every day.

Hopefully The Grove is getting those cars refurbished, I'm getting fed up with the lame blame excuses on why the LD Trains West of Chicago besides the Cap that has these downgraded consists going on year 3! When's Amtrak ever gonna get back to being a great passenger railroad like it used to be!

When Graham Claytor is the president again, because that is how long it has been.

Might it have been the 38034 diner burned in Oakland about 13 years ago?

Has anyone seen that in service recently?

I agree, sad they went downhill slowly when Downs took over, especially relying on Mercer instead of making things better themselves without consultants!

"especially relying on Mercer instead of making things better themselves without consultants!"

Exactly and Gardner is doing it again with this LD order. They don't know what they want  (or need) so they are asking car builders for "ideas".  Personally I think the order "idea" announcement is a farce and it kicks an actual order down the road at least another year, but regardless it's sad these guys are calling the shots. Anyone who truly wants the system to succeed knows a rebuild program has to start ASAP. I'd also go so far as to say make CAF a lucrative offer to get another 30-50 cars started ASAP as well. After that take a breath and get a large order placed within 12-18 months. Mark my word if these guys are still around nothing will be done in the next 18 months regarding LD equipment.

CAF didn't do a particularly fast job last time around...

Even though they were very late, at least they didn't have issues from day 1 like the Seimens crap they got!
