Continuing to monitor post STB delay complaint filing by Amtrak shows terminal arrival times of the Sunset Limited #1 and #2 reveals a pattern, with one notable exception (#2,  9 hrs, 17 mins late into NOL on 1-22), of significant improvement over the pre-STB filing. 

Generally speaking #2 has been arriving early most scheduled days in New Orleans. There have been 3 delays of under one hour and one of just under 2 hours and of course the above mention disaster. The story isn't as good with #1's LAX arrivals. 2 arrivals of just over 2 hours one over 3 hours and 2 under or close to 1 hour late. All other #1 arrival times were early.

With Sunset #1's very early scheduled arrival into LA, running a few hours late is not necessarily a bad thing.

Surprise surprise. Amazing how things can magically improve like that.

Correlation does not imply causation. 

Only bad part is 1 and 2 still run 3 days a week, be nice if UP granted Amtrak to run them daily with a minimal fee compared to charging them an arm and a leg just to do that!
