History of Amtrak Diners?
Author: usa4624

Does anybody have, or know of, a website that lists the heritage of Amtrak\'s low-level dining cars? I would be curious to know which railroads they originally served.

The Amtrak Heritage diners now in service are all Budd products which came from CB&Q, NYC, NP, SR, and SP.

My list is 20 years old when the heritage diner roster maxed-out at 31 cars. Some cars may now be off the roster:

8752 ex-L&N Budd 1949

8750 ex-A&WP Budd 1949 (now owned by Montana Rockies Rail Tours)

8505-09 ex-NP Budd 1957/58 (last diners built before Amtrak) Beautiful cars with NP monads in etched glass partitions.

8526-28 ex-SP Budd 1950

8511-8516, 8518-19, 8554, 8556 ex-NYC Budd 1948

8521,8523,8558,8752 ex-SOU Budd 1949

8502 ex-Q Budd 1952
8501,8503 ex-Q Budd 1956 (8503 wrk/sold)
8500,8504,8510 ex-Q Budd 1948

I think I got em all. Bob

Beautiful indeed! Six cars were specifically built for the NP\'s North Coast Limited operating between Chicago and Seattle via St. Paul, MN, Bismark, ND, Billings and Missoula, MT and Spokane, WA (line of the Great Big Baked Potato). One of the six cars was actually owned by the CB&Q as part of the car mileage equalizing arrangement for the CB&Q handling of the NCL between St Paul and Chicago. Amtrak now operates five of the original six cars; the remaining car is part of BNSF\'s business car fleet.

You are correct. After Amtrak sold this car series in the mid-seventies, 8500 was used a second time for the car I mentioned. Bob

Last time I was at the Grove, the A&WP car, the L&N car and the CNO&TP (Southern) car were being shipped to Alaska. Anyone know for sure that they made it?
