Brighton Line...partly in a cut and partly on elevated fill Sea Beach Line-- on the ROW of the old NY and Sea Beach railway West End line..elevated McDonald Av line...elevated Canarsie Line...south of East New York,,elevated and at grade level. Jamaica (BMT line) elevated over the williamsburg bridge and mostly elevated rest of the way. Rockaway Line....on previous LIRR ROW. some at grade, some on ballasted viaduct, includes 2 swing bridges. Pelham bay and 242st st line...elevated Dyre Ave line....on old NYW&B ROW Im sure im forgetting some..... Date: 05/23/23 04:11 Re: New York Subway Brooklyn Beverley Road Author: march_hare Simple geology lesson here: once you get out onto Long Island (in this case, that includes Queens and most of Brooklyn) tunneling becomes much more difficult because the island is basically a big, deep sand pile. Tunneling through sand requires different techniques than tunneling in hard, strong bedrock. In most cases, it was simpler and cheaper to run the rail lines on the surface or on elevated structures.
I had a professor in college who pointed out that you could map the edge of the Long Island sand pile simply by mapping where the subway tunnels ended. The existing Flatbush IRT branch tunnel had to be reinforced and waterproofed 20 years ago. The Archer Avenue subway in Jamaica leaks profusely. The rats, who get into the crew rooms, love it.
