Back in the olde days, most newspapers and some TV stations had beat reporters. People who knew the local industries in depth, knew the union leadership, knew the CEO, etc.  Could hang around the side track tavern and shoot a few rounds with the guys.  You could write a good story with that info, and you could fact check it with the people who would know.

Now, with Alden, Gannett, Sinclair, Fox, and other vast media owners  etc closely allied with hedge funds and management, news rooms stripped to the bone, places that still have reporters don't have the luxury to do much investigation or fact checking.

I already gave a cryptic hint that 2013 was when real journalism died. Independent thinkers who can help the journalism profession have been discouraged since then. Big Money (not just hedge funds) from control freaks can discourage that even more. The truth (if you dare dig deeper) is very depressing, so I'll stop here.

But knowing it can set you free. Like many on TO, I just laugh at the tragicomedy called journalism these days.

The original poster describes the Washington, DC media is being "Brainwashed."  That's a pretty broad generalization considering all of the media sources based in Washington, a few of which specialize in transportation.  As the reference is to "DC media,"  presumably that implies that there are other areas of the country where the media is not "brainwashed" with respect to coverage of rail transportation.  Where would those places be and what news sources provide what you consider acceptable coverage of rail transportation matters?

This

       is

             not

                        true

                                   at all.

In making this statement, you are slamming at least one Trainorders member who currently is a reporter.

No I'm not. If he's an independent thinker, he's in the minority. I did say "discourage" not "totally gone." Your tactic of "personalizing" doesn't work with me.

Your first sentence: "I already gave a cryptic hint that 2013 was when real journalism died"

Yup. I stand by that statement, based on discouraging changes since 2013. Can't convince me otherwise, regardless of who or what you know.

Good point RuleG, he's so cryptic he "crypted" himself out! If like he said journalism died then it IS totally gone, just like when a human dies they're gone. Cchan006 later backtracking on his orignal statement doesn't convince anyone of anything...

I can't help you guys when an obvious figurative statement (journalism is not a living person) is deliberately taken literally to "win" arguments. Pretty funny when the same sheeps rely on argument "tactics" all the time.

When a PC train "jumped the tracks" in the Kalamazoo area, the wreck train would be called out from Alcott, Indiana.

Bzzzzzzttt, you lose while backtracking even further. Dead is dead, not partly dead and partly alive. If that's what you meant to say since it clearly wasn't obvious (only in your own cryptic mind) then you simply say something more to the point. Not that hard. Pretty funny when your cryptic, twilight zone comments blow up in your face, yet again...

To think that TV station reached out to Amtrak and still were not told the original cause - derailment of rear trucks on engine/lead
trucks on first car of train 84 as it was passing through the switches at A Interlocking (north end of 1st St Tunnel).  The radio
streams were uncharacteristically quiet on the issue.

Media is going to put their limited resources to things that they think their audience cares about.  The vast majority of people could care less about Amtrak, trains, railroads, etc., so little time is spent on it.  Just because some old fart on Trainorders think something is important doesn't make it so.

If you don't like today's journalism, blame yourself unless you pay for a subscription to a reputable news source, whether it be the local newspaper, public radio, public TV, or digital publication.  Good journalism, or good media of any kind, isn't free, and never has been. Clickbait ads just don't cover it.

I don’t really think it’s a big, corporate plot, the newspapers are just starving for revenue, and can’t afford to hire many reporters anymore. The advertising revenue has crashed and burned the past 20 years due to the other alternate places to advertise, plus newspaper subscriptions, have crashed and burned as well. In other words, they just don’t have the money anymore. Kind of sad, because it used to be nice when people did investigative reporting.

The large media folks (Gateway, Sinclair, Fox, etc) make plenty of money. And upstream it to their owners.

Don't be a jerk. If you have a problem with cchan send him a PM instead of trying to win an argument here...
