51 cancelled in Indianapolis on 9/18
Author: Cardinalrider13

I just noticed that the Cardinal is cancelled today from Indianapolis to Chicago. The train appeared to be on time for the trip to Indianapolis. I couldn't find any information on Amtrak website. Does anyone know what happened?

Absolute outage on the Monon for a bridge replacement.

I am pretty shocked that Amtrak ran the train at all.  Normally something like this is cause for a full cancellation.

So that is positive.  I trust the train will originate in Indy on Tuesday evening/Wednesday morning?

I was supposed to take it from Cincinnati to Charlottesville round trip over the weekend, but my wife got a stomach bug so we postponed the trip. The trains had be running pretty much on time for the past several days and was actually early in Cincy this morning. I see no mention of interrupted service on Amtrak's website.

Correct.  Known last week it was coming.   The question is what detours could have been arranged because the train itself still needs to get to Chicago to depart from there Tuesday.   I think we all know CSX owns more than one route to Chicago.

The train is scheduled to be deadheaded after the curfew.

Please give us a route that realistically works and still serve Indy.  I'll wait....

Please advise. I will wait as will Typhoon.
The only possible "detour" is via Terre Haute.

Yes. I grew up here and moved back when I retired. I take the Cardinal a few times per year, primarily to connect in Chicago. I started riding trains with my family as a child, including several trips on James Whitcome Riley. I'b be glad to join the group,

Why it’s as obvious as the nose on your face. Take the NYC Chicago West to Kankakee, then up the IC. Duh. 😂.

Ha! Actually, I believe it is still all in from Lafayette to Kankakee, but mostly 10 to 20MPH, unsignaled branch. It connects with the CN/IC just north of the Amtrak KKI station, and connects with the Monon just south of the Lafayette station. Would be great rare milage!😎

Do you know where on the Monon?

Yes, and my information was not completely correct.  It was not a bridge replacement, it was to install the pedestrian tunnel for the South Shore's Dyer station.

That was what I was hoping ... although the original plan was to build a shoe-fly for the bridge construction.

The work in Dyer is at Main St, the dividing line of Munster and Dyer, and will end with Main St extended to the west under the CSX track to a large parking lot and station on the west side of the CSX track. There will also be a pedestrian tunnel under the  CSX track (and the West Lake corridor track) to reach the station platform on the east side. There will be a second smaller parking lot south of Main St on the east side of the tracks.

So there should be a rail bridge over the extended road plus a pedestrian tunnel. The West Lake corridor track will run on the east side of the CSX line and end before crossing Main St.

Perhaps they got the tunnel in and the shoe-fly for the larger bridge construction?
