Amtrak ballast trains travelling over Metro-North
Author: twropr

On Feb. 13 there was a post of an Amtrak ACS-64 pulling hoppers past the South Norwalk railcam at 1:44 am.   I learned that Amtrak is hauling ballast in its hoppers
from the quarries east of Old Saybrook, CT - most likely Pine Orchard.  This may be ballast used for the additional tracks being built for the Penn Station Access Project
on the Hell Gate Line.  I also learned that the ACS motors can be modified to handle freight.

I don't know if the Pine Orchard tracks are still accessible, but th the area used to be great for watching Tilcon switchers work the yard and the docks.
