Thank you Amtrak. But why?
Author: OnTime

This morning, totally out of the blue and unsolicited, I received from Amtrak a new ticket for my 3/8 departure on #2 to New Orleans. I was upgraded from a roomette to a bedroom at no additional charge. Their was no explanation.

I, and my traveling partner are totally delighted by this pleasant surprise, but why?

My best guest is that there will be no transition/crew sleeper on that run and Amtrak needed my roomette for crew space. Does that sound plausible?

More than likely they have more train attendents or LSAs in training and needed the roomette for a trainee and saw there was Bedroom space available instead. Usually it's the opposite where you're kicked down to Coach. And for the Sunset they have permanently removed the Dorm and the second Coach. So on the Sunset section there are only 7 roomettes for sale out of the possible 17 (when the dorm car still ran and OBS was housed in the Dorm - 13 Roomettes in the full Sleeper and 4 were for sale in the Dorm).

If business is so bad that they can only sell that few rooms per trip, they may as well just drop the whole train. I think that’s part of the master plan.

Interesting.  I got such an upgrade about a year ago, and I was told that it was because it was easier for them to sell a roomette a day before departure than a bedroom, so I was bumped because I probably had more Guest Reward points than anyone else in the car.  And it worked.  The sleeper was full according to the attendant.  This was on the Silver Meteor.

It was a pleasant surprise.

Why say that since this is just proof on how Amtrak's still downgrading the LD Fleet, this type of news always drives me nuts!

Because he seems to be advocating for cutting the train. Which I don’t agree with.

Seems the consist of the Sunset Limited hit some deep cuts post-2018. It and the Texas Eagle consist NEVER operated this way till just recently. And it is not benefcial for the growth of ridership at all.

Keep thinking that, it's sad you don't see the reality of how Amtrak's run these days then before Airline Boy and when they were doing awesome in the 90s!
