NJ Transit reliability 2023
Author: Lackawanna484

Colleen Wilson of NorthJersey.com takes a look at NJ Transit's reliability.  Although Governor Murphy likes to point to improvements in train and bus service (and blame many problems on his predecessor or Amtrak), many improvements have not filtered down to riders.  Fewer trains are cancelled due to lack of engineers (just one in 2023), but many trains break down en route.  Median time beteween failures is swinging wildly from quarter to quarter, and even new equipment has problems.

Lots of data

Not surprised in the least. There are multiple train cancellations due to mechanical problems every single day. Judging by which ones, they cannot blame it all on 47 year old Arrow MU's, but on newer locomotives.

So I presume the dual mode locomotives/motors are included in the failure rate - but are they in the lead of failures? I'd really hope not, since they are one piece of expensive machinery! Not like I'd be surprised. I saw scanned through the article - is there not a chart of some sort? Just looking for the cheat sheet and cliff notes! LOL!

The F40's/GP40's and the 15 year old Alstom PL42's rank as the worst, the latter usually the worst of the worst. That is what I gathered from reading their monthly Board minutes.

When you see an Dover, MSU (both MDT) or Long Branch train cancelled, it is not one of them.

OK, that jives with what I've heard as well. The PL42s have been problematic since day 1.

Aren't the PL42AC units in their last months? I thought I heard that somewhere.
