Amtrak locomotives in Louisville, Ky

My son saw these at Osborn Yard (CSX) in Louisville, Ky.  Does anyone have any idea what they would be doing there?

Just a guess. They may have been dropped off from the PAL. I have seen a few times Amtrak locos brought from Paducah sitting in the PAL yard. The PAL transfer may have brought them to CSX for further distribution.

Is Amtrak renumbering the 700 series Geep units.
Or getting more of them?

There is information around that those are part of an order by Amtrak for rebuilt GP38s by Progress Rail, to be used for MOW and switcher duties.

They may have originally been the LIRR's until 1999, not 100% sure.

These switchers may allow Amtrak to move more P32-8 units now used as yard switchers into road service.  These P32 units already have HEP and were road service units for several years.

the 2299 unit just went south on the CSX Riverline on M403. It just passed the bigtrainstv webcam at CP10 at 14:52 today.  Wonder where the other unit ended up, did it go out towards Boston on the B&A?

They're doing an important job right now, they're protection engines.
