Passenger Trains > 5 (15) Not yet left Chicago.

Am catching 5 from OMA-EMY tonight but currently that looks like tomorrow morning or not at all. Any gen?

Apparently it's going to run but delayed about 2.5 hours.  No reason provided by Amtrak.

Yikes! Nothing was running terribly late inbound to Chicago yesterday, Sunday, 4/14/2024 (e.g. Train #6, which lays over a night to go back east as Train #5). Southwest Chief and Empire Builder got out on time today, 4/15/2024, as did Texas Eagle, albeit 15 minutes late. 

70 degree weather. HVAC issue on a sleeper. Likely has to be switched out.

So per the Amtrak usual, "unforeseen mechanical issues." A phrase they love.

Well, now approaching 3.5 hours late and no departure yet. 

Does 5 have a fresh T&E crew out of Chicago?
How far do they go ?

Train #5 (15) left Chicago at 5:42 pm, 3 hours and 42 minutes late. 

So in cases like this is the dining car ready to serve upon departure?

Did amtrak Marc regale the waiting crowd with tales of the 75 year history of the CZ ?
How in the 1950's windows didn't get washed and trains were hours late ?
Oh, wait...........

 

Are you kidding? A late departure typically is the perfect excuse and SOP for - "sorry folks, dinner in the Dining car will be delayed and shortened to just two seatings this evening." Been there done that!

Some things never change.

And don't forget, late trains get later.

POOR managament as usual.......followed by a litany of excuses.  

But there is a small ray of hope.  The train has a slow schedule and can actually make up considerable time.  

Yes they do, they work to Ottumwa.

Especially in Chicago since they always let the set sit there and don't find the problem until the last minute!

#5 has gotten towards 4 hours late, maybe more now potentially?

meanwhile #6 just got delayed  a couple hours

and was wondering about 3 and 4 as there have been tornado watches and high winds with a cold front in central nebraska and kansas this morning

5 and 6 seem to be tiptoing as winds of 60mph plus have been noted

Suppose I should respond to my own post.

I’m currently on board #5(15)

We left Omaha 4h19 down. Lost another ½ hour to McCook and have lost about that again due to 40mph high wind restrictions. Not yet at Fort Morgan. We are between Akron and Brush.

I stayed awake to witness the storms and then nodded off but I woke up coming out from under the edge of a supercell.

I’ll post photos of the train at Lincoln and storm pics later. Can’t do so from the mobile site which is kind of annoying.

Hey 37176, how are you enjoying that bouncy track East of Denver? 174+205 stormed over it on Sunday and nearly through me out of my bed!!
