Kudos to them. I wonder how they got UP to make an agreement with them?

Hasn't UP had an agreement with them for a long time? I was under the impression in years past, they used a UP engine crew with their own on board staff. Otherwise a Rocky Mountaineer crew would have to qualify on the territory so it was easier to use UP engineers and conductors.

paid the UP  and UP can run short timed crewed trains around them if they need to, and the trains operate on a less demanding schedule compared with amtrak,  and have their own crews,  these trips are part of the qualification process.

UP crews do not operate Rocky.  One of the reasons Rocky was able to make an agreement with UP was the stipulation that Rocky use its own operating crews.  UP likes it since they have no involvement with equipment, crews, servicing.  Rocky provides all that for themselves, and all UP has to provide is the railroad and dispatchers.  BSB

I wonder how much of a percentage of the fare is attributible to the UP's track charges?

well amtrak trains pay  5$ a mile  sometimes up to 10$  so if they charged 100$ a mile...to rmr?   The UP mgmt team has been said to be  very happy and took a trip, each season so far.  Maybe another soon?
