All By Its Lonesome: Newly Painted Amtrak Engine 167
Author: Prophoto

Engines are not supposed to sit alone in the middle of nowhere. But that happened to Amtrak's Engine No. 167 recently. It suffered a sticking parking brake that heated one of its wheels way beyond safety. The crew of the Southwest Chief's No. 4 had to set it out at the closest siding.

The engine was not easy for this layperson to find, until a helpful conductor told me where it was. Nor was it easy to get to. But it was worth the effort.

When I got there, the engine was idling which was disconcerting because no one was around. Thanks to one of the professionals who utilize this site I now know that Amtrak's engines can turn themselves on to prevent low air or eminent battery failure.

It was a lovely day to be out with a camera!

Great photos with beautiful scenery.  I can hear the wind in the trees and the birds in the background.

You do know this is a P42 not a Charger, right?

I mean... He's not wrong... The Charger's still more reliable.

Thanks for the rare, rear-uncoupled view.  Interesting to see a couple of GE stickers back there on a freshly repainted unit rather than something with a Wabtec logo.

Run into any foxes while you were there?

is that were it is!

Ge had some teething problems when they were fresh,  someone mentioned, not verified, not sure anything approaching these siemens thou

see how those chargers  hold up....  amtrak should have GE rebuild them when they offered..

amtrak sure doesn't mind leaving damaged equipment scattered about the west, for company that is always short

Let’s see if the Chargers are reliable after 23 years service and millions of miles…..

Great photo opportunity - but can you tell us what state and location this is?  My guess would be New Mexico or Arizona, with the lack of double-track suggesting NM.

(The problems with the 167 were probably mentioned in past threads, but I didn't easily see scrolling through the last week or so of posts on the TO Passenger board).

I'll save my money. That's not a bet I'd be willing to make.

I've heard that it was moved to ABQ for repairs.

I'd say somewhere on the Amtrak only BNSF in New Mexico.  And if it went to Albuquerque for repair, I'm probably right.. I wonder how they got it there. Did BNSF send a unit to pick it up? Or did It run at a very restricted speed to get there? Was some work done at the location to hobble it back to Aklbuquerque?

I suppose since the unit has been moved, perhaps you can tell us where it was?

Amtrak sent an extra loco on 4(16) that was used as a road switcher to haul it back to ABQ. The extra loco, 202, returned to LA on 3(20).
