Passenger Trains > Black substance on R/H side of Engine#142 Amtrak #3

What was the black substance on Amtrak #3 SWC Engine #142 R/H side that arrived in LAX this morning?

Did it look like how 142 looks in the photos at the bottom of this thread: https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?4,5849851 ?  My guess was 142 was coughing up fuel or oil of some kind.

The engine was spotted on a railcam with black oil deposits on it, Just out of Chicago.

That was the same set on Amtrak #3, 161 & 142. Thank you both.

Here's a photo Gene posted to another group... And it came that way straight out of IT?? Oh yeah, that was Chicago.

Oil. It was repaired and set out without being cleaned up from what I read. 

I guess Amtrak doesn't believe in presenting a good and clean corporate image? I mean this is just basic stuff. It makes a rider or other stakeholder question what the heck is going on with this company and whether they are a reliable/credible company to be doing business with (e.g. riding with). You would NEVER have seen this back in private railroad days, absent of the wreck of the Penn Central - to borrow that title for a moment.

If it was repaired, why was it set out?

A good ol' classic American diesel locomotive. If she ain't spittin' smoke and oil, something's not right!

Must have been repaired if it in operation. Why can't it be cleaned up? 

The snarkiness is a bit much. Give it a rest. 

If they cleaned it up that would generate some hazardous waste, oily rags and such. Which means they would have to go through all the steps required to properly dispose of it.
Easier to let the next shop do it...
