Passenger Trains > Silver Meteor access questionsDate: 04/26/24 14:41 Silver Meteor access questions Author: SGillings A relative is thinking about taking the Silver Meteor between Charleston and Savannah. She has difficuty walking and uses a wheelchair. She also has difficulty climbing steps.
How friendly/not friendly is boarding the train for someone with those difficulties? Where would Amtrak keep the wheelchair? Are there any other possible issues to consider? TIA. Steve Date: 04/26/24 14:48 Re: Silver Meteor access questions Author: GenePoon Sleeper or Coach?
In Coach, she should reserve a wheelchair seat, which has adjacent parking space for the wheelchair. In Sleeper, she should reserve the handicapped Bedroom (code M) which is larger, has a sink and shower facility, and lots of space to store the wheelchair and her baggage, in the shower annex which is much larger than in a Bedroom. Neither Charleston nor Savannah have high platforms. If on foot, she would board from grade level to a stepbox, and up the steps to the car's floor level. But there are wheelchair lifts available at both. She should specify that she will need the wheelchair lift, when making the reservation, so that the requirement is noted in the manifest.
