Passenger Trains > 40 Minutes in SJC, Plus Travel TimeDate: 08/30/24 15:46 40 Minutes in SJC, Plus Travel Time Author: broken_link On an overcast Thursday, August 22, I traveled from Burlingame to San Jose to shot some photos and videos of the soon to be retired diesel-electrics and Nippon Sharyo gallery cars at San Jose Diridon Station.
Video: I think the train numbers in the video are mostly correct based on the timestamps for my videos, but I’m not a note taker with trains and times, and the asterisked train numbers might have been repositioning moves. Photo 1: I traveled south on an all-stops local from Burlingame, train 108, on one of these things. Wanting something more “traditional,” I detrained at Palo Alto where I knew all southbound trains would stop heading to SJC. Photo 2: Yeah, this is what I’m looking for. There will be plenty of time to ride the electric trains in the future. JPBX 917 “Gilroy” is hauling a set of gallery cars for express train 706. This train was bouncing and rocking so violently that it was difficult to take these shots. These trainsets have never provided a smooth ride in my 20 years of riding them. I’m willing to trade nostalgia for a more pleasant ride, but the 2-wide seats with picture windows on the upper level next to the bulkheads will be remembered as my second favorite spot to ride these.
Photo 5: The rear of train 706 at San Jose Diridon, highlighting the outside view of my favorite spot to ride the gallery cars. I was a semi-regular bike commuter travelling to and from San Jose, and I would frequently stand next to the door window for the entire trip up the Peninsula in the evenings. That is probably the number one thing I’ll miss about the Nippon Sharyo cars going away. My son started high school this year and commutes to and from school via Caltrain and bike. He recently discovered this spot riding home from school and took a video of almost the entire trip from Belmont to Burlingame. Train 507 is seen departing Santa Clara. Infant EMU set 319/320 is passing the Santa Clara depot, California’s oldest operating railroad depot at 161 years old.
Photo 9: I decided to head to Mountain View for an early lunch. The next northbound into Santa Clara was local train 115 operated by EMU set 301/302. I think the area around the Santa Clara Caltrain Station has seen some of the more significant changes along the Caltrain line in the 20 years I’ve lived in the Bay Area. There is, of course, the new station platforms that were constructed there. I watched the adjacent Newhall Yard shrink down to a pair of sidings as Union Pacific operations for San Jose shifted to Milpitas / Warm Springs / Newark. The MRVSJ/MSJRV and through freights on the Coast Line disappeared. The ACE trains received a new layover location south of Tamien Station. The FMC, later United Defense, and later yet BAE Systems facility and test track on Coleman Avenue has been turned into tech offices and a soccer stadium for the San Jose Earthquakes. I used to enjoy watching them running M113 and M2 Bradley vehicles around the back lot while waiting to catch the train home from Santa Clara. Photo 14: JPBX 911 “San Carlos” with southbound limited train 508. A couple minutes after this shot I made my way over to the northbound platform and headed home. Cheers, Sean Date: 08/30/24 17:23 Re: 40 Minutes in SJC, Plus Travel Time Author: texchief1 Nice coverage!
