Passenger Trains > Caltrans New Jersey Comets Still in L.A.?Date: 08/31/24 06:46 Caltrans New Jersey Comets Still in L.A.? Author: milepost20 Back in late June six of the Caltrans-owned former New Jesey Transit Comets(along with two NPCU's)
were added to #11 at Oakland and sent to Los Angeles. Initial reports were that they would be used to provide extra services to special events such as X-Games and/or Comic-Con. Did any such trains run? Are they still in Los Angeles or have they returned to Oakland? The Comets were built by St. Louis Car in 1968-69. Beech Grove rebuilt 14 of them in 2013-2014 to intercity standards as 64-seat coaches primarily for San Joaquin service. The eight that remained in Oakland continue in sevice as non-revenue axle count cars to meet BNSF's 28 axle minimum for the San Joaquin trains. Yesterday's #716 is seen in Jack London Square deadheading from the Oakland coach yard down to OKJ to pick up its passengers. CDTX 5013 is tucked in behind the power.
