Train 11 turns in KFS due to battery fire
Author: stash

"As of 12:28 AM PT, Service Adjustment: Train 11 is now terminated at Klamath Falls (KFS) due to a freight train carrying lithium batteries catching fire. Emergency responders estimate that the tracks will reopen within 6-8 hours. We have attempted to secure buses but have not been successful. Unfortunately, this train is forced to reverse, so customers must return to their originating station. Customers getting on in intermediate stations between Kalamth Falls (KFS) and Sacramento (SAC) must rebook."

Amtrak 14 is turning at Sacramento and going back to LA. No buses available so passengers go back to where they got on.
Now how would I get back home when Amtrak take me back to where I started from?
Hope LA had extra cars to add?

I'm assuming it's this fire on the Valley Sub near Marysville.

Railfan special.  More time on train, no extra fare.

and in the incredibly "we dont know how to run a transpirtation company"  ppl on board are being told they have to go back to their origination point. IMHO ...this is so Amjoke has no hotel or other responsibility.   Of course, if it were me, Id just get off where i wanted to, if i didnt want to go home.
If i were really tryimng to get to SEA, id get off at SAC or OAK , and wait till the next amtk goes thru, or fly.
So far today 9/2, amtk is turning 14 at OAK.    The talk was 6 to 8 hours for cleanup of the fire, but so far, seems amtk is happy to cancel trains for 24 or 48 hours (if not more).

Amtrak  "the less trains we run, the bigger our bonusses"

Too bad UP's Canyon Sub doesn't have PTC. 11 and 14 could have been routed to/from Klamath Falls via BNSF's Gateway Sub. It wouldn't be the first time. Bob Larson shot of a Starlight detour on 12/16/73 at Robbers Creek, CA in the WP days.

That's how today's Amtrak is, they can't wait things out like they used to do!

How would holding passengers capitve on a passenger train for an unknown amount of time be better?

Fly to your destination, then patronize a nearby rail attraction or museum.  They need and appreciate your dollars more than Amtrak does.

Look at how they did it before Airline Boy took over, it's happened a lot of times!

What a nightmare.  Imagine you have ridden LA - Sacramento and this happens.  You sit for a few hours while Amtrak fails to find some buses. Then they tell you that you have to ride all the way back to LA?  There just seems to be no regard for the passengers at all.
Imagine what the SP would have done.  They would have dragged the mess to the nearest siding and gotten traffic flowing again.
I am at least as devout a railfan as the average TO member, but i will never put my family on a long-distance Amtrak train.  These scenarios are just too frequent.

SP didn’t deal with lithium battery fires.

I would have offloaded in Sacramento if on Train #14 or Klamath Falls if on Train #11 and rented a car or found an airport at that point. But there are other folks travelling by train that CAN NOT do that. You are correct though - this can be a complete nightmare and Amtrak's handling of challenging situations is more to be desired. The Amtrak LD train model is broken, but there's also no solution even being thought of.

I'd travel amtrak again, but have travel insurance that pays for plane rides home.

The SP would have moved a burning train down the tracks, through towns and over crossings to put it in a siding. Then proceed to run trains on and adjacent track while the train burns, the fire department is on scene and is surrounded by men and equipment?

Wow, the SP was a terrible company.

You missed the idea of rolling the car off the rail into the local orphange.

The Company followed the times, things changed from way back when vs the last few years. The Company existed during some horrible times when people treated each other differently than they do today. Plenty of recent examples of good things happening to try to be a good neighbor, especially after some major accidents.

That Company has been gone for almost 30 years, the ship sank, move on.

Agree with the idea of finding an alternative way to finish the trip, or find your own hotel for the night and continue on the next availeble train to complete the trip. It's not inconcievable for a proper Hotel to pick up a Customer at the Train Station, not every Hotel or Motel does that but some do. Same with Rental Cars.

It does sound odd at first but for the general population returning to the point of origin suggests there's an amount of safety involved, most folks would have a freind or relative at one end or the other. Vacationers would be agile enough to add an adventure night somewhere safe, beats camping out at the Airport when their things go wrong.

Surprised the odd title lasted this long, #11 didn't have a problem with batteries.

Just because that's how they used to do it doesn't make it better.
