Passenger Trains > Goleta (CA) train station groundbreaking Sept 12Date: 09/04/24 00:51 Goleta (CA) train station groundbreaking Sept 12 Author: cph We hope you will join us for the Goleta Train Depot groundbreaking on Thursday, September 12! The event begins at 10 a.m. at 27 S. La Patera Lane where a new full-service multi-modal train station will be built next to the existing Amtrak platform. By constructing a full-service station, the City aims to increase train ridership, improve connections to bus transit, support transit services to and from the Santa Barbara Airport and UC Santa Barbara, and introduce new bicycle and pedestrian facilities.
[...] The Goleta Train Depot facility will encompass 8,550 square feet, providing a permanent, enclosed, and safe structure for Amtrak passengers to use while waiting to board or after disembarking from trains. The building will be located adjacent to the existing train platform and the parking lot and access driveways will be located in front of the depot building. Replacing this drop off with short shelter.

Little did I know then I would be a part of the live steam hobby later in life. I've done both Uber and a long walk (mostly on a dirt shoulder) to the SB airport and a more pedestrian/cyclist friendly place plus bus service would improve things for people going to the airport or UCSB.

"The architecture of the new facility draws inspiration from the traditional historic Southern Pacific Railroad depot design while incorporating modern elements. The depot will feature large windows and columns to support covered walkway areas, which will create protected outdoor areas around the building. A new turnaround area will be located off S. La Patera Lane at the site entrance, designed to facilitate an easy drop-off and pick-up for buses and shuttles. Several electric vehicle charging stations will be available on-site, and approximately half of the roof will consist of state-of-the-art roofing panels to capture solar energy." =18px - Goleta on Track for a New Train Depot: Groundbreaking Set for September 12 â edhat The station will be built on land just south of the current platform (a disused steel building currently occupies the property). The project also includes an improved bus stop/turnaround and (I think) sidewalks along La Patera Ave to Hollister... I think the designers have done a great job of maintaining the style of the SP depot while enlarging it. Gerry

I was a student there in the 80s, and, in some ways, it's more difficult for today's students to use ground-based, long-distance transportation (Amtrak, Greyhound, etc.) than it was for me back then..... The current station is located in a short strip of land between a warehouse structure and the railroad tracks. The plan is to demolish that warehouse and build the station and its parking lot on that site. The warehouse is a fairly bland metal structure and isn't historic as far as I know. The City of Goleta has owned the warehouse property since about 2018 when they first started working on this new depot. Not sure if it was ever rail-served when the local used to come switch La Patera from Oxnard.
