NY Opinion: We need more cops on subways and buses
Author: Lackawanna484

NY Times opinion columnist Pamela Paul goes against the grain with her view that more police and more fare enforcement is needed on New York City's buses and subways.  She discusses "broken windows" and "stop and frisk", but adds "if you can get away with it, go for it".  With 48% of bus riders not paying, and 16% of subway riders jumping on, the MTA is forgoing a lot of revenue.

As a rider of NYC subways, NJ Transit, and PATH, I'd agree with her. I used to see a lot of NY theater and concerts, getting out in the wee hours.  I have rarely seen theft or harassment in the PATH system, but I have seen fare jumpers grabbed and vigorously removed by uniformed and plain clothes police. Of both genders, incidentally.  There's a high ratio of police to trains / platforms in the seven (?) station system.

Some feel NYC needs to go back to "Giuliani Time."

Stop and frisk is now illegal.

The NYCT station at W4th gets a lot of police calls, but nearby PATH Christopher and 9th Street do not, despite only one stairway at one end of the platform. They are under more intense surveillance.

I have seen people jump PATH turnstiles at WTC in front of me with PA cops 20' away and not looking in the right direction at the right time. (PATH has 13 stations in 2 states).

Paywall, as almost always, but the TO post pretty much tells the story, I'd say.

I rarely ride the subway anymore, but when I do, if police are present, they are leaning agianst the wall next to the clerk's booth playing with their phones.

With the NY Times making the effort to publish this editorial I have to wonder are there people advocating for less police on subways and trains?

The

The editorial opinion noted a substantial number of people object to detaining or arresting fare beaters and other petty offenders.

More police and security won't solve the crime problem when the perps face no serious consequences for their crimes.

100% correct. ☝️☝️☝️ Lifetime criminal scumbags know they can get away with it and continue to leech off society. There are no consequences.

The evidence in the Guiliani / Bratton years disputes this.  Many fare beaters, people taking up two seats, etc also have drugs on them, illegal weapons by a felon, outstanding and unpaid warrants.

Stuff that gets you locked up for a while.

It's not a red state / blue state thing. Here in solid red Florida, people are routinely turned loose after assaults, drunk driving accidents with injuries, etc
