I know nothing,  of the event  , last traveled over it in 1980.........

Not sure I knew then,  and defiantly  not now there was still a drawbridge on the line.

I have seen other bridge posts quite similar. _ **** D E L A Y S ****

Troubled bridge over water.

This is a recurring issue, and when CALTRANS built the new sister bridge, UP was interested in building a new "high" bridge to eliminate this old, cranky lift span.  But.........UP didn't move ahead for some reason.

Most of the bridge is fine--it's the lifting and locking mechanism that get hung up.  Same on the old bridge over the Sacramento river right near the Sacramento station (that's a swing span that has locking issues).

UP has to do something, but I suspect they won't for a long time, because this not a "high priority" route anymore.  They can head over Altamont, then Donner, and leave the mess to the CAPITOL CORRIDOR folks to suffer with.

All movable bridges have problems locking and unlocking. Lot's of moving pieces and they ALL have to be in the right place at the right time.
