NJT's "Leaf Train": It only comes out at night!
Author: Pattenburg

For the past few years during the fall, I have attempted to photograph NJT's elusive (at least to me) "Leaf Train on the Raritan Valley Line. Tuesday night I got it somewhat right at the High Bridge station. This is the point on the line where the train terminates before heading back to Raritan where it awaits its next day's evening run. Normal departure time from Raritan Monday through Thursday and Sunday is around 9:30 PM. Estimated time of arrival before reaching High Bridge is about one hour. For these two photos, which was a learning process for me, they were done in existing light. The camera's ISO was set at 1600 with the camera on a tripod.

Photo 1: Shows the train's arrival in High Bridge spraying the rails. The AquaTrack equipment is a high-pressure power washing system that removes the oily residue left behind by fallen leaves on the tracks to prevent train delays caused by “slippery rail” conditions. The decaying leaves create an oily residue that coats the rails which results in poor traction. The AquaTrack system has been in use by NJ TRANSIT since October 2003.  It consists of two 250-horsepower diesel-engine units mounted on a flat car with an operator control cab.  Two pressure-pump units dispense water up to 20,000 pounds-per-square-inch directly to the top of the rail.  The process uses 17 gallons of water per minute.

Photo 2: With its work done the train is heading back to Raritan.

Very nice.  The Aqua Train also spends a fair amount of time on the Montclair electric line. The cut through Glen Ridge is often a magnet for leaves.  It's not unusual for only the first few cars to open doors, and I've been on trains which backed up to get a better start on the hill.

Wasn't able to see since where I was and to get to see the power was a distance. Also it doesn't stay in High Bridge that long before heading back to Raritan. Hopefully on my next trip up is when I will photograph the power since it doesn't change from trip to trip.

The leaf train equipment used to live at the MW facility North of the Wesmont station in Wood-Ridge.

I don't know if that is still the case.
