AMTK 161, the locomotive burned to a crisp in a Washington, D.C. fire last night, frolics in the morning sun at Tacoma, pulling the Coast Starlight on the water-level route along Puget Sound in 2021.

Last reported spotting in revenue operation of the AMTK 161:  Train 157(24NOV) at Ashland VA.

Apparently nobody reported spotting it returning to Washington DC.

If the AMTK 161 was on 157 on the 24th, it likely went back to DC on the next morning's train 84 out of Norfolk.

By the way, yours truly "met" 157 on northbound 124 on the 24th. We crossed over 2-to-3 at Milford while 157 waited.

There were a slew of delays that afternoon/evening due to "trespasser activity" (Amtrak's term, not mine) in Glen Allen. Later news reports state the Carolinian (train 80) struck and killed a cyclist at the Hungary Rd. grade crossing.

You could get a pretty good idea what was going on thanks to Amtrak Status Maps. Amtrak also sent out multiple texts with updates on the delays. The railroad was shut down for nearly three hours. The authorities re-opened one track just before 6 pm.

This is Amtrak #161 photographed at Alexandria, VA leading train 84 on November 25, 2024 just hours before the fire.  This is a cellphone photo from the adjacent King Street Metro Station platform.

I was having trouble doing that, and after searching the site, I found a suggestion to rename the image file and save it, and then attach it to the post.  That worked - at least this time.
