This is the black, road over rail, swing bridge right outside CSRM, right? -Rob Date: 11/28/24 08:29 Re: Capitol Corridor: Bridge problems at Davis, again Author: usmc1401 Yes same bridge.

I saw the I Street Bridge lift one time. About 10 years ago. I didn't think there any kind of traffic on the Sacramento River. Jerry Martin Los Angeles, CA Central Coast Railroad Festival Date: 11/28/24 15:17 Re: Capitol Corridor: Bridge problems at Davis, again Author: PHall GP25 Wrote:

Replacing the I Street Bridge and the Benicia Bridge over the Carquinez Strait on the Cal-P will be costly endeavours that will probably have to happen in my life time in order to keep the Capitol Corridor operation sustainable.

I also wouldn't be surprised if someday U.P. decides they "don't really need the Cal-P", & offers to sell it at a too good to refuse price to the state, and then retain trackage rights. Time will tell sooner than later. Desmond Praetzel, "4451Puff" Date: 11/29/24 17:30 Re: Capitol Corridor: Bridge problems at Davis, again Author: coach A few years ago, a BIG project was undertaken to upgrade lots of levees along the Sacramento river, north of Sacramento. Lots of barge / tugboats went thru these bridges, which had to open. So, yes, there is still occasional commercial traffic, and lots of pleasure boat traffic.
The irony is the West Sacramento barge canal and locks, built decades ago specifically to take barge traffic OFF the Sacramento river and instead route traffic via the canal, then down the deep water ship channel to Rio Vista, was not used at all. Why, you ask? The Army Corps did not maintain their dredging to the entrance on the Sacramento river side, and it completely silted in. So, all those tugs and barges bringing in rock and rip-rap from the bay quarries had to go up the curvy Sacramento river and thru many, many bridges. Had the Corps done their job, that barge canal and lock system would have seen HUNDREDS of uses during that project to shore up the levees. That would have been very, very cool to see and watch. But, no. Taxpayer money totally down the drain. And the now the barge locks have been permanently closed! Go figure! A 49/59 mph max with no passing would be a painful alternative to the two-main-track, CTC Cal-P. |
