51 is out there! I'll be darned.
Author: Chessie1963

Credit to Amtrak for operating train #51 as usual today.  I did not expect that given the fact that #50 was canceled.  Not sure how Amtrak is going to cover Sunday's #51 from NYC, but they must have a plan.

I have to say, Amtrak exceeded my (admittedly low) expectations today.

And  since  the  crews  usually  do a  turn  from  #  50... how  will  this  work??

Actually 50(9) DID run. Cooler heads got together a consist and it went out about 7 1/2 hours late. New reservations were not opened until it departed Chicago... just in case. So it showed unavailable all day.

Is that the "plan" Chessie1963 referred to?

Must be.  Props to Amtrak.

51 seems to be making a good run today. Imagine that. 50 also is making an excellent run after leaving its origin point 7 hours late. I guess they can run in the snow after all.

Of note, I'm wondering how long it has been normal to cancel both trains on a route when one of the trains is canceled even if the opposing train has no justification of being canceled? Surely, the lack of serviceable equipment is why that practice is now standard, but it hasn't always been done that way.

It's a pretty sad state of affairs when we are amazed that a train is traveling according to the regular timetable.

Maybe CSX should impose a 2 engine rule given the mechanical condition of both GE's and Chargers.
Amtrak needs to invest in some HEP power cars, not to be built by Siemens, maybe some stripped down GP38/GP40's like GO Transit and LIRR once had in the form of various F units.

That 8 hour late #50 arriving Saturday morning is not needed until Sunday morning. I hope it doesn't freeze up in SSY, but I would put nothing past them.

What does Rocky Mountaineer have for HEP cars? Where did they get their's fabricated? Have as backup, along with some good second hand freight locos because this ain't getting too much better!

Then Amtrak would be admitting that the Chargers suck. Not happening.

I say order 100-200 Genesis B  units, maybe some GP70PH units like CNJ GP40P's and SP GP40P-2's, order new P45BwH's as the cowl nose makes them better winter units. Just my $0.2 worth
