Amtrak 332(25) - Hodgepodge Set
Author: sethamtrak

Seen rolling through Morton Grove this morning at 9:25am. As I mentioned yesterday, 1340 was a deadhead train account frozen toilets. This set was a late makeup set as deadhead 341 to Milwaukee. It overnighted there then ran today as 332. Hopefully this is not the set intended to be used for 1333 today as they will need 3 more horizons and a dinette. We shall see. This is certainly one of the whackiest Hiawatha trains I have ever seen. Even for the three car baby "Covid" Hiawatha five years ago.

The 'Hodgepodge' set rolling south through Sturtevant on Hiawatha 332 this morning.  Apparently, anything 'thawed' will work.

They won't use the Venture cars on the Borealis because it's a state funded train and those cars are IDOT cars. State of Illinois doesn't fund the Borealis so therefore they won't let their cars be used on it. Same reason it's always Amtrak owned cars and motors on 1333/1340. This is my understanding anyways.

It also has to do with Minnesota not buying any of the Venture cars.

I understand the IDOT argument.  But here's the thing -- News Flash! -- the traveling public doesn't care who owns what.  They have this idea that passenger trains are a service, with a predictable timetable.

This sort of thing comes across to me as kindergarden kids yelling "Mine!  Mine! My toy!  Not yours!"

Keep poisoning the well, bureaucrats.  State DOTs, IMO, need to remove themselves from the operations side of train running.  There has to exist a better way.

The MBTA has two of the F40PH2s and eight or ten MBB cars that were purchased by Rhode Island as part  of  "Pilgrim "? partnership to help restore service to Providence circa 1988. Ownership/funding doesn't appear on the units or cars.  Amtrak Midwest has several states that participate while some states that would seem to be naturals do not and the route map reflects that for service and equipment deployment.

Then that Amtrak Horizon car should come off the Hiawatha and be replaced by a State Owned Venture passenger car and if they don't have a Venture car ready - oh well??? There's some flexibility here - especially when in this type of a pinch. The Borealis was released from Chicago 1/25/2025 with Superliner Coach Cars. Amtrak needs Superliner Coach Cars for the LD trains. Better cancel the Denver Ski Train to get those cars back. After all it's only $20 a seat on the Ski Train operating four days a week.
