Passenger Trains > More Floridian woes - Monday 1/27/25Date: 01/27/25 11:54 More Floridian woes - Monday 1/27/25 Author: scraphauler The Floridian that left Miami Sunday left with an extra coach - I do not know if it was deadhead or revenue (suspect deadhead), but deadhead equipment handled by the Star / Floridian is traditionally head out between the power and first revenue coach. Either-way, Deadhead or Revenue, my ASSUMPTION is this is the train left Miami left Miami with all 5 coaches on head end. Train traversed Florida close to on time, arriving Jacksonville 46 minutes late. Lost a little more time there in station for whatever reason, departing 1 hour and 5 minutes off advertised. At Columbia SC, things went to crap. At 626 AM today, Amtrak alert said they where having mechanical issues they where attempting to resolve. An hour later they were still at a standstill and reported that they were "attempting to remove an inoperable car from the consist". At 1017 they finally resolved their problem and departed 3 hours and 21 minutes late. The normal 50 minute trip from Columbia to Camden SC took 2 hours and 20 minutes. Lost another hour and ten minutes in Hamlet. Departed Southern Pines NC 6 hours and 45 minutes off advertised.
Here is the train in Aberdeen NC at 137pm 1/27/25, just prior to the Southern Pines stop. You'll notice the 5th coach is now on the rear of the train. Reportedly the "inoperative" car was having HEP connectivity problems and was switched to rear of train. Also peculiar to this consist - typically the Floridian has a Viewliner I and Viewliner II sleepers - today it's two of the Viewliner I's. You must be a registered subscriber to watch videos. So the coach capacity is unaffected by this dead-heading car from what I can tell. I don't think it is certain that this dead-head coach was originally behind the head-end power and then switched to the rear. I heard it was locomotive issues again that cause the delay described. I saw a sleeper dead-headed on the bac of the Floridian in December 2024, that's what kinda raises my question to. Keep in mind also, that the Lake Shore Limited has had to flip flop some train sets with the Floridian, so the NYC section of the Lake Shore Limited has seen Viewliner II cars again, whereas before the switching, it the NYC section was always ONLY getting Viewliner I sleepers.

Regardless, they lost close to 6 hours on an already late train. Train is now down 7:17 leaving Richmond. Looks like another daylight run across Ohio...again.

Got it - thanks! I would definitely go with the radio chatter you picked up as validity to why the coach is on the rear!!! Thanks for capturing this in video!!! |
