Passenger train impacts in DC due to air crash?
Author: P

Are there any Amtrak effects due to the air crash in DC tonight?

I believe I heard a reference to a Metro line shut down, but have seen nothing regarding Amtrak.

Why would there be?

Have you turned on a TV tonight? Major air crash in DC at the Potomac River. Metro line shut down to accommodate rescue efforts. I'm not sure where the Amtrak lines are in relation to this, hence the question.
I shouldn't have to expand on this that much as my initial post should have been enough info to understand what is happening in DC tonight or prompt you to turn on a news source to learn more.

"Why should there be" might have been an educated response but it was def an empty one.

WUS has very little going on by this hour and is far enough from the incident site for it not to matter.

The Metro, CSX (also hosting Amtrak and VRE), and 14th Street bridges all cross the Potomac parallel to each other just to the northwest of Reagan Airport. So it's certainly plausible to wonder if one was affected were the others.

Yes, all rail traffic from the south has to cross the Potomac River on the Long Bridge.

Last night a few minutes late Amtrak 66(29) left Alexandria at 937 PM and arrived in Washington Union Station at 953 PM, according to Amtrak Status Maps.  And this morning an early 98(29) crossed the Long Bridge at 648 AM.  So it appears there may not have been any major delays because of the air crash.

The TV  news arrounced that WMATA was extending operating hours for the Silver Line, which runs in from Dullas Airport to accomodate passengers on flights diverted there....

The crash occured on the final approach to Runway 33, just to the southeast of the airport. Not in close proximity to Long Bridge, unlike Air Florida 90.

As per the norm here on TO, the original post and the first half-dozen responses include (silent) presumptions and incomplete information.

Things would be much better if everyone would slow down, breathe, and stop being presumptive and judgmental and take the time to post with complete sentences and thoughts and full relevant information.

People on here complain about how the mass news media gets things wrong. Just look at the posts here on TO to find out why.

Before I actually started reading the thread, just by looking at the title, I thought this was going to be another post about the trump administration cutting Amtrak funding.

A question relevant in 2025. Was a different story once upon a time. In 1968, a plane took out a hangar at Ohare. People immediately jumped to what nobody would think of now - use a train. Railroads in Chicago were scrambling, looking for cars to add to trains or run extra sections, even leasing cars from other railroads that had cars to spare. B&O even ran a second section of the Cap.

Does anyone know why they shut down the Metro line? Seems to me that it would add more traffic onto the roads being used by responders.

I must be missing something.

The blurb that I heard on the TV news implied that their bridge over the Potomac was close enough and downstream from the incident site that they thought the bridge could somehow be involved in rescue efforts that were immediately underway. Having trains cross could hinder those efforts. I'm not that familiar with the layout of things there, but this is a very plausible scenario. I don't know any other details but was somehow hopeful this would generate a discussion about what is going on in regards to rail services. I didnt expect rude posts by either clueless or condescending individuals that have chosen to post a reply here. *not saying your post is, but previous ones.

Reducing the number of moving objects while doing a search and rescue mission at night enables the first responders to focus more on the task at hand.

Not being from DC I thought the original post posed a valid question. A simple “The incident had no effect on Amtrak operations.” Was all that was needed in reply.

But unless the responders were to use the metro structure I can’t see how the metro would interfere. But they did say it was downstream so maybe they didn’t want drifting debris to hit the metro bridge. Maybe that was the reason.

Yup.

There's a tendency for some TO members to try to make seemingly off topic events to be train-related, common one being celebrity deaths --> was he a model railroader? So this thread might have been started with that intent.

I've been hearing news and updates regarding the mid-air collision since last night. I have developed a "B.S. filter" for the news outlets as a survival tool in the Empire of Lies, and didn't see anything train related, even though the initial reports were panicky.

The airplane wreckage was in the Potomac River south of the airport runways, which are a good mile downstream of the Metro bridge over the river, the Long Bridge used by Amtrak over the river, and the 14th Street bridges over the river.

If any flotsam or jetsam were floating away from the wreck site, they would be traveling downstream, further away from the aforementioned bridges and toward the Capitol Beltway bridge over the Potomac River, which is several miles further downstream (south).

Some material from the crash has been recovered from the area around the Woodrow Wilson bridge (I-95) more than a mile south of the crash site.
