Winter Park/Fraser, Colorado for non-skiers?
Author: RuleG

I may have an opportunity to be in Denver at the end of March and was thinking about riding the Winter Park Express.  However, I am not a skier.  Yes, I can photograph a few trains such as the California Zephyr and one or two freights, but I am wondering about other things I can do between the arrival of the Winter Park Express and the return trip to Denver.  Should I purchase a ticket to Winter Park Resort (WPR) or Fraser-Winter Park (WIP)?

My other idea is to ride the Georgetown Loop Railroad which will begin its 2025 season at the end of March.

Thank you, in advance, for any recommendations.

Winter Park. Enjoy and watch the trains go by sitting in the lounge. Used to be a shuttle bus between WP and Fraser

Go to fraser you can watch the engines switch ends, maybe watch the CZ make it's station stop, in the am , couple places you could eat to walk to in Fraser , ride bus up to WIP check it out, you could eat there looking at the tracks, also a place called coffee  and tea in the balcony house locals love, ride the bus back to Fraser to board the ski train, if the CZ is on time they will let it go first i think, usually isn't on time,  you can also can ride the gondola up top( and back down) and eat up top i think.  Or you could learn to ski, if you skated or something not that hard.

My vote would be to ride the ski lift/gondola at least once.

1- Ride the Winter Park Express to Fraser, CO.  There's a building used by Amtrak passengers if you want to warm up or use the restroom.

2 - The Lift FREE Black line bus stops at the Fraser Depot area.  Hop on and it loops up to Winter Park Ski Resort.  Good way to get a feel of the area.

Yes to all that was said. Here's a lnk to the shuttle bus schedule: https://www.theliftwp.com/.

Riding the gondola up to Sunspot is also a good idea. It's free after 4:00; the ride is 5 minutes. https://www.winterparkresort.com/things-to-do/activities/winter-mountaintop-apres. Or you can do it earlier, buy a scenic ride lift ticket, https://www.winterparkresort.com/things-to-do/activities/scenic-gondola-winter.

Or as someone said, rent equipment and take a lesson to learn to ski. It's incredibly fun. I'm heading down after work today, will ski all day tomorrow. I'm 75 and ski 40 days every year.

My advice if you decide to ski, TAKE A LESSON.

I ski once a week and regret never having taken a lesson, first skied at 24 (I'm 65 now). No lessons back then because 1) I was a hockey player, and 2) a stubborn male. That regret is compounded by having tweaked my MCL on Thursday, skiing...

There's plenty of restaurants and shops in the town of Winter Park too!  How about tubing?
That tubing hill isn't too far from Fraser!  Also, there's some snowmobile tours.  I went on one
that took us way up towards Corona Pass on the old ROW!  That was memorable!
If the weather is nice, you should walk up some of the residential streets South of Winter Park.
Some truly beautiful million dollar mountain homes up there!

I LOL'D on that one. Ha. No offense to the original poster, but in my mind, I envisioned a 70 year old man going down the mountain on an inner tube and can only imagine the spectacle. My son was invited on a tubing adventure this winter and I gracefully bowed out of that opportunity. I'm in my 50s and have concluded my inner tube days are over.

think there is a tow up the mountain,  probably more strenuous catching a flight at a large airport
