SMART Train: weather related service suspension

Due to flooding we are temporarily suspending service between Novato Hamilton Station and San Rafael Station. We are working to establish a bus bridge between these two locations. More info to follow. Thank you for your patience.

So, they rebuild the line, but didn't take seasonal flooding into account, while thank goodness!!--the highway department does, and so we can all take buses.  Think about that.

What's wrong with these modern day railroad people?  Lack of thinking.

Even if u ballast the track 2 feet about the surrounding base, there are going to be some areas that just flood.  I probably has more to do with runoff than actual rain at that spot.    Runoff, unfortunately, changes with building of roads, parking lots, buildings, fire scars, ..everything. 

There have been huge problems at places due to changes in runoff patterns, due to construction.  The construction industry is rarely required to do water runoff  research before building. ..especially with housing.   Its build houses, take the money and run. 

FWIW UP reporting water up to the railhead at Shasta St in Redding.

Service has resumed, as flooding subsided.

Most often flooded segment is at Ignacio where runoff and high tides were a problem in SP/NWP days.  But south of Hamilton I can only think of two locations where flooding could be a problem: the creek at St. Vincents and the Marin sewer plant.

US-101 and SR-37 among several other highways were shut down for up to an hour as well yesterday due to flooding...

Dig deeper and you'll reach a different conclusion. Why are parts of NWP (NorthWestern Pacific) permanently out of service due to weather damage? Definitely not built by "modern day railroad people." It's on topic because SMART operates on segments of ex-NWP.

We've had a decade-long drought in Northern California until about 2-3 years ago. I still remember the wetter weather cycle we had in the 1980s-1990s, so this doesn't surprise me, especially since we had far less passenger railroading in the Bay Area back then compared to today.

It's a good problem to have, if you are a real Bay Area resident.
