Passenger Trains > Amtrak's Crescent "bolts" through Metuchen, NJ after sunsetDate: 02/08/25 15:53 Amtrak's Crescent "bolts" through Metuchen, NJ after sunset Author: Mgoldman A New York bound Crescent, originating in New Orleans, LA charges
through Metuchen, NJ after sunset. Got lucky capturing the arc which illuminated the pantagraph. Captured at 1/25th - not much of a zoom pan effect, but afforded some more lattitude in editing with the lower ISO. February 1st, 2025. /Mitch ![]() Date: 02/08/25 16:05 Re: Amtrak's Crescent "bolts" through Metuchen, NJ after sunset Author: regalstream1516 Beautiful shot. Thank you!!!!!

The catenary wire, feeding the ‘motors’, over the tracks slightly weaves left and right over the centerline of the tracks. It’s critical on long, straight portions of track, so that it wears more of the replaceable carbon collector-blocks of the pantographs over a wider collecting area. Otherwise, it can wear a groove in only one or two carbon blocks in the center of the individual pantographs. At terminals, the motors’ carbon blocks are regularly checked, with power off, and pantographs lowered. Worn carbon blocks are easily replaceable. W. ( ‘Motors’ is a RR classic term distinguishing electric locos from ‘engines’ —- as in Steam Engines— and the electrically-powered units that haul trains. As diesel-electric units arrived, it was common to refer to them also as ‘motors’.) Posted from iPhone |
