Passenger Trains > Amtrak train numbers in the 1000s

Remind me, please, what it means when Amtrak adds 1,000 to a regular train number.

A regular train running on an irregular schedule. 1041 for 41, 1097 for 97, etc. 

The change to daylight savings time had many schedules adjusted to accommodate the loss of an hour.  We saw lots of 1000 numbers over the weekend, with two night trips finishing today.

Does this happen with the autumn clock change, when trains have to hold somewhere after 2am ?

Yep, happens twice a year. Just like clockwork...

or during trackwork sometimes, when the schedule is planned to different than normal i think

Seems like this year they only applied the 1000-series to routes where multiple trains with the same number would be operating simultaneously - for example, the two day western trains.  I was on 48 Saturday evening and it ran with it's usual number, but on a schedule that added an hour to each stop after 2am Sunday.

Years ago it started with the swc then spread to other bn lines.   Some said it was the bn computer.  This was before they put a special schedule for the day, we loose an hour, but in the fall no schedule adjustments are needed as trains just set an wait for an extra hour of padding,  first time I noticed in the east this time.    You maybe right sunset starlight on the UP regular.  Others say it is amtraks computer software, growing into a more established practice these days,  others have said it may be done on other lines but not publicly displayed...
