Passenger Trains > 40/41 Tampa turnDate: 03/11/25 09:15 40/41 Tampa turn Author: GN1969 As Tampa is a dead end station, how are trains 40/41 turned to proceed back to Lakeland and beyond?
Date: 03/11/25 09:19 Re: 40/41 Tampa turn Author: stevelv The last time I was there they would back in off a wye by the station.
Date: 03/11/25 09:53 Re: 40/41 Tampa turn Author: swaool They turn on a wye in Ybor City and back in, as stevelv describes. The wye is some distance east of the station (between 36th and 38th Streets) and requires a back-up move of a bit over a mile. There is also a diamond crossing with the TECO streetcar line just east of the depot. If you do a search on "the tube" for Distant Signal, he has several videos which document this. The wye is part of a stub which was once the ACL line up through Thonotosassa and Zephyrhills to Vitis Junction. It now terminates at Sligh Ave.

As in when the old Silver Palm route was in place where they only served Lakeland once and then there was a connection heading north out of Tampa that then connected back in to the Silver Service train lines by Jacksonville. Hopefully that makes sense, otherwise, I'd have to go back to old timetables and pull the station stops that were dropped. Not a fan of how the Floridian or Silver Star has to backtrack to/from Tampa via Lakeland. But it's the only way to serve Tampa, which Tampa does need.

served Tampa as well as Ocala, Wildwood and Waldo on the ex-SAL via Plant City. Meanwhile, 91/92 (Star) bypassed Tampa via Auburndale, but unfortunately, that arrangement ended on 10-31-'04 when 89/90 was cut back to Savannah. Date: 03/12/25 05:18 Re: 40/41 Tampa turn Author: jp1822 CPMorris Wrote:

That's what I am referring to. Thank you! That's when the Palmetto was known as the Silver Palm, and you had the trio of "Silver Service Trains" - Silver Star, Silver Palm, Silver Meteor. I thought that was very positive for Amtrak as they had a morning, mid-day, and evening train departing Miami/NYP. But my question is, when the Silver Palm operated (nee Palmetto) to/from Tampa direct, was the wye to get in/out of Tampa Station used like it is today??? Or was there some other arrangement used to get the Silver Palm in and through Tampa Train Station? Tampa is one station I've not been at. Lakeland (close!), but not Tampa. It is called the "NEVE WYE" and has been used as long as I can remember for backing all passenger trains into/out of TUS.

Very informative and well done ! Danny has done MANY superb topics that explain so many things railroad and railfan related , one can't help but learn and enjoy !!
