FL: Martin County rejects Quiet Zones
Author: Lackawanna484

The Martin County commissioners have rejected a plan that would have begun application for quiet zones along the Florida East Coast  / BrightLine corridor.  The issue has been especially contentious in East Stuart and Port Salerno where there are four crossings within a mile and a half. Port Salerno has a W3 sign post north of Seaward Street.  Residents complain the horns are almost continuous.  The railroad, for its part, would be happy to close several of these crossings, and offered to do so in the prep for BrightLine.

Enforcement of crossing rules is inconsistent in this area. It isn't unusual to see cars stopped on the tracks awaiting a turn signal light, or trucks racing through descending gates,

In Florida, rejection of quiet zones would seem a good idea.

Tell that to the Florida residents who are complaining about the horns then.  Good luck!

They're entitled, they don't have to. Just ask them.

Why? Isn't the majority of Florida residences almost deaf?

To me, the blat of the crossing horn's are worse than the train horns.

You do have a point.

Train horns don't need to be so loud they are heard a mile(s) away in all directions, they should be mounted low, forward and downward to be effective at crossings. They should not be roof mounted and pointed in both directions.

Try an experiment: Mount some train horns on a vehicle and go out to the homes of politicians, rail managers and employees and sound them similar to crossings multiple times a day and night. See if they complain, then tell them to get over it.

Jack, at your age, you aren't deaf yet?

They don't care if the quiet zones get more fools killed as if there aren't enough of them.

Nope, not even close. Even after one and a half years in the Army, Headquarters, Division Artillery, 2nd Armored Division (Fort Hood, TX). But then, I live in Illinois and not Florida.

So, if we are going to generalize and say everyone in Florida is deaf, does that make everyone living in Illinois a crook?

Hmm, I see a lot of videos of crazyness on Michigan Ave, or all over the burbs of people breaking into stores and stealing.   So you must all be like that, right?

Pretty much. Even when they are caught, nothing much happens to them, thus they go right back out and do it again.

That should be everywhere, only reason why they're there is because of the crybabies we got in this country!

I dunno.

In Florida, red traffic signals are an optional "stop" for some drivers.  Around here, you never want to move instantly on a signal turning green, since 2-3 people are going to blow thru the red.

Beautiful! You are so full of sh&t. Have you ever lived in an expensive house within 3 or 4 blocks of a major multi-track commuter railroad? Obviously not. On the three track former CB&Q commute line between Aurora and Chicago, the Burlington institute the "quiet zones", way back in the steam era, i.e. 1940s or earlier.
