Passenger Trains > Expanding Weekend Transit Service: Essex County, NJ-NYC Sat,Sun

There continued push for improving NJT service from the Montclair, NJ area into the city and back on weekends is continuing to gain strong support, especially expanding the weekend NJT Montclair-Boonton Line service. As I have mentioned many times before, ever since Decamp left the commuter bus business in April of 2023, that has left a huge gap in traveling into the city from many towns in Essex County, particularly Montclair, Bloomfield, the Caldwells, West Orange, Glen Ridge, and Verona. It would be very good if New Jersey Transit could run the Montclair-Boonton Line more frequently on the weekends like hourly. Instead of just having the trains stop at Bay Street Station, they should run at least to Montclair State University so that way the stations in Upper Montclair as well as Watchung Avenue and Walnut Street are served too. Although NJT won't be able to increase train service into New York Penn Station for a bit because of the Gateway Tunnel project being under construction, they should be able to run to Hoboken Terminal. They will need an extra trainset and extra crew but at least, there is enough room at Hoboken Terminal to run more weekend trains to and from there. Passengers coming from Little Falls, Montclair, Glen Ridge, and Bloomfield who are heading to NYC can switch trains at Newark Broad St Station. Having these hourly trains run between Montclair State University and Hoboken Terminal would also open up other doors to traveling like traveling from Upper Montclair to Downtown Bloomfield without having to take a slow ride on the 28 bus.
