"......rail event......"  A new euphemism for derailment. I like that!
Much better than "lost contact with the rails."

There's a telephone rumor that the southbound Amtrak #11 was terminated at Klamath Falls last night, no busses, no arrangements. Since there are no details we're all curious if the passengers were allowed to stay in the cars or if the HEP was available. Or what did happen.

My $0.02 is the rails will be open later today but no info from any websites or sources. One indicator will be if #11 leaves Seattle today.

Transit docs shows the KF equipment turned and heading to Seattle. Today's #11 has left Seattle. The overnight action is summarized here, stated as from Amtrak through vaious means:

How sad, sent the passengers back home the way they came.  I guess that is great for a railfan...  you get a free roundtrip ride and your money back.

Southwest had a direct flight that left Sacramento at 12:30pm and arrived in Eugene at 1:55pm. Maybe some passengers finished their travel that way.

There's a Tour Bus Company across the street from  the KF station, they tour Crater Lake in the better seasons. I'm sure there are limitations with running into California and no doubt the extra cost of Diesel in California. Or perhaps they don't need the busses to be trashed out on a long haul, I doubt they are listed on TikTok.

But that's business I suppose.

Why does everyone think that there are extra buses and extra bus drivers just sitting around waiting for some possible call.  I can assure you that is not the case.  I am actually surprised how often they can find buses.  Also many of the summer seasonal bus companies that do tours like at Crater Lake are school bus drivers during the non-summer months.  So they aren't availale now.

For Amtrak's first 50 years this is how Amtrak did it.  I have been on a couple of bustitutions including one out of Dunsmuir and Amtrak was able to scrounge up buses on short notice in the middle of nowhere. We don't see many bus substitutions anymore on Amtrak even when they have long notice. I think Amtrak doesn't try anymore.  It is a lot easier to cancel the train and not bother with the logistics that go along with substituting buses for a train.

fwiw agree the Tour busses are non standard and they would need long distance drivers. It's pretty clear there are no provisions for finding work arounds, everything has to perfect, permitted and paid for, including in small towns where not much happens during snow season.

Which explains why the passengers are returned to their station of origin. Or whatever did happen to them. Must be a perfect world out there somewhere.

I'm guessing  there are a lot less bus companies out there today, than there were 20 years ago.   Id think that the 2008 recession and Covid have had their toll.
As for amtrak, seems Gardners plan all along has been to get Amtrak as close to break even financially as possible..whatever it takes.   The LD trains are treated like tourist trains....if the tourists dont get to a destination, its OK.    Small trains, high fares, keep employees to a minimum.
