Passenger Trains > 5(19) - Canceled

5(19) is canned out of Chicago this afternoon "due to equipment issues, which was incurred from inclement weather conditions. Alternate transportation will not be provided". 

Ooh. Almost forgot to add the last part of their message. "We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause." 

6 arrived into Chicago 17 minutes early yesterday at 2:22pm.

So what has the weather been like in Chicago for the past 24 hours?

wonder if it was planned  a week ago, someone said he was told  6 23 was cancelled, which almost would be the same train set, i think it would be 6 22 coming back?  but he may have been boarding in colo on train  the 23rd which would be right, see if i can look,  maybe they wanted to test the car washer ! ;o)

Believe this is related to the fact that 6(17) is basically stranded west of Lincoln, NE due to severe winter weather. 

if they launched #5 it would get caught in these winds to, amtrak alerts says the train 6 in nebraska is being held for crew rest.  5 traversed the same strom with a 2 hour delay last night it appears

The guys at the coachyard are probably worried about the thunderstorm warning.

Inconvenience?  No.  Not a bit.  Don't worry about it!  No problem finding last minute reasonably priced flights to Ottumwa, Creston, McCook, Grand Jct., etc.  Plus alternate hotel accomodations, rental changes, ad nauseum.  We'll just drag our luggage and kids over to Dearborn St. and take the Blue Line out to Ohare.  The (non) passengers who thought they were getting on at Mt. Pleasant and Osceola will be better off staying home anyway.

Actually the (non) passengers should be thanking Amtrak for the opportunity to sample competing travel modes.  Win win!

Lincoln and Omaha, NE are getting hammered with blizzard conditions. I wonder if that is the reason why 5(19) is cancelled. Weather in Chicago over the last few days has been on the full roller coaster. 80 last Friday, snow back on Sunday, 45 right now. Only constant has been wind.

They cancelled it because they can.

I laughed on the way home during our day trip to Chicago on Saturday, leaving the big city on the Ill. Zephyr, the first announcement was, "Folks we don't have an operating cafe car on the train tonight.  I've got some snacks and bottled water that I can sell and that's about it."  

I'm sure most experienced riders had already eaten before we left, but I hoped no one had planned on a warm hot dog for supper on the way home!

Yep, because Ammanagment thinks Amtrak's an airline! This type off bull crap since Airline Boy was CEO is beyond stupidity!

Only derailment in California that’s been reported as affecting Amtrak was just north of Dunsmuir and affected the Starlights, not the Zephyrs.

Also appears the next #6 is sitting in Denver with no status available, indicating it may be in service disruption. Wondering now if it might be turned.

Being reported on the Western board BNSF is mobilizing a rotary to rescue both the 6 and an equally stranded Z train that might have the #6’s relief crew on board.

The cancelation of No. 5 is a fitting way for amtrak to wind up the year long celebration

Couldn't find one of the new Vulture food service cars to use?

Part of the attraction of a one day round trip via train to Chicago.

On the way to Chicago some coffee and pastry for breakfast from the food service car.

While shopping on the Mag Mile a big lunch at the Signature Room in the Hancock,
or perhaps the Grand Lux; maybe Ruth's Chris Steak House on River North.

On the way home in the evening a nice sandwich from the amtrak food car.
A nice finish to a great day.

Some great stories to share with friends and neighbors.  Word of mouth is the best advertisement.

Over the years I've seen posts on Amtrak getting through even if they were hours late! Sucks that's not routine anymore!
