I heard it was a family from Spain.  Husband, wife and three kids.  Sad.  Seems like the chopper just broke apart.

His wife was the scion of the longtime ownership/operating family of F. C. Barcelona,  one of the premier soccer clubs in Europe.  She had also been a Siemens executive

Very sad and highly unfortunate news. Thoughts and prayers for his extended family, friends, colleagues at Siemens and friends among the customers he evidently served well. And for the helicopter pilot and his or her family, friends, colleagues. A real tragedy whose impact will touch many.

It appeared that the transmission failed in flight. Check out Blanoclirio's channel on youtube.

Yes, I saw it before I saw your post. I always like to get his analysis. He  is very good.

Take it with a LARGE grain of salt because the NTSB is still looking for pieces like the main rotor and the transmission.
Until they can find those parts among others there really isn't a way to say what happened.
Small helicopters like this don't have flight recorders.

In cases of airplanes, this is probably a good idea.  In the case of helicopters, there's a lot of witnesses and good video.  Juan Browne's analysis is spot on because there are several things witnessed that point to just one failure.  And I'll go one step further,  first, the man rotor dd not touch the tail boom as the main rotor was witnessed and recorded descending away from the helicopter and was completely intact.  It also appeared the main gearbox was attached to it.  Given the abrupt rotation of the helicopter followed by the separation of the main rotor and the tail boom does not take flight recorders or voice recorders to determine the cause of the abrupt disassembly.

The sheer number of people shooting video, and their willingness to share what they heard and saw should help investigators.

Yes it will help but until you can actually get your hands on the missing parts there is no sure way to come up with the cause.
But the missing pieces are pretty big so here's hoping that the side scanning sonar and the divers can find them.

Hope so too, but I am guessing that the flow of the Hudson could move the pieces quite a way.

The transmission is metal and heavy so it shouldn't go too far. The rotor blades being of composite construction might drift a bit but they're pretty big so they should show up on the side scan sonar.

The 206L has a unique system of dampers that attach engine and main gearbox to the airframe, if I recall correctly. They are timed components. It's the reason the 206L is a smoother ride than the 206. I'd be looking to see where they might be and what the maintenance logs look like.  Just my .02 after many flight hours in both models.

Main rotor can stay intact even after a boom strike, but this isn't a case where the rotor stayed on the helicopter where an autorotation was still a possibility. Saw the video. Tail boom section with the tail rotor assembly was already gone.
