Extreme late #4 stabbed by Railrunners
Author: mp51w

Looks like the Southwest Chief train #4 is sitting South of the Albuqurque station waiting on a Southbound Rio Metro Regional Transit District Railrunner train!
Huge delays started last night when they had to set out a deadheading Metrolink car that had a stuck brake.

The train you speak of is also missing a Superliner Coach-Baggage car.  There is a Metrolink coach on the head end behind the power, the Coach-Baggage was removed from the rear.  It is going to be musical chairs between Kansas City and Chicago Saturday...

NMRX brought them to the new Broadway SDG, actually a well planned meet, looks like they were stopped for about 5 min As Iit crossed the Grande at 1800 and was back to speed at 1811.

How do the crew situation work when 4 is so late to Fort Madison?  I was given to understand the engineer for 4 takes 3 back to Kansas City later that same day.  That won't work obviously if 4 is later than 3...or is there some ther arrangement?
Edit:  fat fingers

Your failure to plan properly does not create an emergency on my part.

Why does Amtrak assume every property owner (BNSF NMRX etc) should yield to it?

community, pride, service, in line with the states goals, amtrak is also a good crew taxi

the chief has also helped bnsf maintain rail access to big geographic area should any mining or other development pop up

Amtrak doesn't expect that. Train orders.com members, on the other hand...

Some other arrangement, years ago the answer was 'of course there is. Now, doubtful and may not have even crossed anyones mind at Amtrak that there is going to be a problem. They go home at mid afternoon and their mind was not on any problems probably by 9:30 in the morning
There is already a letter on each vacant desk stating " Sorry for the inconvenience"   -   just fill in the date and train number.  Voila! problem taken care of.

i assume Ft madison  crews run to chi too, so the crew base there is capable of running either way? living there could be cheaper

If 4 is late Amtrak will cab an engineer from KC to Fort Madison. The inbound 4 engineer can either work west on his hours on 3  and be relieved enroute or can deadhead back on 3.
or in this case if 4 got there after 3 the deadhead from KC in the cab will take 3 west
Thats waht my Hogger friend at Amtrak tells me.

Primary strategic rule of train dispatching:
  • Never make a train that is on time late helping a late train.
  • If the on time train can make it to the destination within recovery time, ok to help the late train.
  • If the on time train can make it within Schedule Tolerance, ok to help the late train but don't make it a habit.
