Avelia test train 844 at RTE 128 - 4/11/25
Author: JPB

I was a few minutes too late to capture the ~3 pm arrival of Amtrak Avelia test train 844 at the Rte 128 station outside of Boston but fortunately it was stopped. Thirty seconds later it departed for Back Bay and South Station. A glimpse inside a window shows that seats are installed but still wrapped in plastic.

Hopefully the Avelias enter service soon on the NE Corridor as the Acelas are looking a bit ragged as this picture of 2021 taken at Boston South Station on 3/31/25 shows.

Thanks for the Avelia Test Train update.  The Northeast Corridor needs new equipment.

It's incorrect to refer to these new trains as "Avelia"

It's obvious Amtrak intends to call them "Acela" -- as
evidenced by the name and logo shown on the locomotive.

I hope they ride as good as they look.  Can't wait to ride.

Is that a red door for first class?

Agreed that Amtrak wants to exploit the Acela high end corridor service brand for these next gen trains but the manufacturer, Alstom, calls the equipment "Avelia".

It's sorta like when Amtrak replaced the original Budd built Metroliner MUs (prone to breaking down) with  more reliable locomotive hauled (AEM7 IIRC) Amfleet running express NE Corridor schedules under the well established Metroliner service offering brand.

Fifty years ago in May 1975 The Budd Co. delivered the first Amfleet coaches , 84 seaters , to Amtrak . The original handle for the 492 car order called them  "Metroshells" and there were those that thought "EMU non-powered trailers" .  Amfleet  was what an outside firm came up with for equipment .  I still think the new HST should still be called  - Acela 21 , Avelia is a name used by the builder rather than the operator . When they do arrive I hope they were worth the wait .

At least you didn't call me names this time --- "Chicken-Little" being your favorite.

Glad Amtrak will call them Acela -- which is a more marketable name--and well established on the NEC.

How much longer are they gonna keep testing them, they already got a bad rap on when they were supposed to enter service for 3 years!

Nice to see the new equipment rolling.  I traveled from Baltimore to NYC last Saturday and saw one of the new train sets sitting outside 30th Street Station soon after we departed,  a forlorn sight.

Ah, yes. The 100% reliable online encyclopedia that anyone can edit.

Personally I would have gone straight to the horse's mouth and discovered they are called the "NextGen Acela" by Amtrak. Which is the company that will own and operate the new trains.

If these runs are qualifying the equipment over the whole line, that is a wonderful sign.

If anyone can get a radar gun pointed at it near N Kingtown RI, or South Brunswick NJ, that would be even better.

Ah, one of my reliable name-callers.  So childish. And shameful.

This time. I don't know what the hell you're  objecting too.

My advice to you is---look at the name and logo shown on the
sides of all of these trainsets---then you will know what to properly call them.

I'm actually agreeing with you. But I don't understand how that is being a "reliable name-caller," or how it is "childish" or "shameful." Perhaps I do need that C2 language class after all.

Sorry, I see now you were referring to longliveSP.

I thought you were referring to me.  I apologize.

They look bad partly because they are dirty. So the new ones will look ratty soon after they enter service. Even seen a dirty charter bus? Me neither. Amtrak has no pride.
