Class I's with single TK ABS
Author: twropr

Are there any single track lines that have Automatic Block Signals (no CTC) on a single track operated by a
Class I railroad that hosts Amtrak besides NS (former SOU Meridian-New Orleans) and UP (former SP
Coast Line between Gilroy and San Luis Obispo)?

Is the BNSF/BN/GN line Amtrak uses from Fargo to Minot via Grand Forks ABS? I'm thinking that when I first started periodically riding the builder 20 years ago it was, but it may have been upgraded since then.

Actually, on the SP coast line its single track ABS from Santa margarita to Salinas...with hand throw switches at the passing sidings.
I talked to an Amtrak engineer wh lives in town, a few years ago...He sais that other amtk employees around the system couldnt believe that they had to stop the train and get out and throw hand-throws at meets!!
These days with so little traffic on the coast, the amtk crews dont have to do the very often anymore.

While the Pass itself is CTC, much of the subdivision is single track ABS with Spring Switch sidings. ABS is from LAJ to TRI, and Springer to Rowe on the Glorieta. NMRX finally ditched their failing ABS system last year.

The line from Fargo to Minot via Grand Forks was substantially upgraded in the 2012-2014 timeframe during the Bakken oil boom. The signal system remained ABS with “CTC Islands installed at a few select sidings.

Thanks to the last two posters for clarifying the situation on the Grand Forks route.
