Can anyone explain the rectangular orange or amber light on the BART cabcars above the front windshield.

The theory is that it warns track workers that the approaching
object is a BART train, rather than being, say, car headlights on
a flanking freeway.

Something's more fundamentally wrong when workers are killed
by passing trains, but this band-aid was what was instituted.
