The 111 in Breckenridge, Colorado
Author: RebStout

Here are more neat photos from the Kris Lane Collection…

Photos #1 thru #3 – The 111…a 36” gauge 2-8-0 – located at Boreas Pass Road in Breckenridge. Railroad line is the IRCA (International Railways of Central America). It is listed as operational, obtained from Guatemala, May, 2004.

More info I dug up…
The Town of Breckenridge purchased Locomotive No. 111 on July 20, 2002, at a railroad auction for the Sundown and Southern Railroad Company, in Hudson, Colorado. Locomotive No. 111 was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1926. It is a large, narrow gauge, oil fired engine, known for its power and agility. The design of Locomotive No. 111 is similar to the engines that ran the 'High Line' route which served Breckenridge beginning in the late 1800's. After two years of extensive cosmetic restoration, the locomotive was placed on display at the Rotary Snowplow Park in 2004.
On October 24, 2005 Locomotive No. 111 was removed from the Rotary Snowplow Park and is currently being functionally restored by Ulrich Locomotive Works in Strasburg, Colorado. After the restoration, the Locomotive will be put to work hauling passengers on the Georgetown Loop. In exchange, Breckenridge will receive another locomotive for temporary display purposes, and ultimately a functional locomotive capable of operating on a track in Breckenridge.

Hi, Reb!

Nice shots. Good to see you posting. Looks like I'll need to swing through Colorado again in a few years to see all the new engines at the loop.

Hi Z...

Good hearing from ya! Glad you enjoyed Kris's shots...we both like to go to out-of-the-way places, which is pretty obvious I suppose. Yup, you sure need to make another Colorado run...always something happening in the mountain state!
Reb
