Vestiges of Two Wars

Two former German 52 Class Kriesgloks storm across a Ukrainian bridge on an American fan trip in February, 1994. Analogous to the USRA 2-8-2, over 6000 of these locomotives were built by Germany to provide transport of military supplies to all of the combat theaters in World War II. Following the war the surviving engines found homes throughout Europe, with some going as far as Turkey. The Soviet Union appropriated over 2/3 of the total original production, re-gauged them and designated them as their class TE.

Guarding the train’s passage is a military pillbox at the base of the first bridge pier. No longer in service, these posts protected important railway bridges throughout the Cold War. Surely, they must have been viewed as miserable duty assignments during the dead of winter.

Cheers,
Jack
