Use the locomotives until no longer economically viable/sustainable. Drag them off the system into a dirt compound and shred them into little bits suitable for the smelter.

I think the UP and BNSF have, but only as a result of wrecks.

Common practice in North America is to rebuild units after 20-25 years, providing another 20-25 years of productive use. Units are stripped to the frame, rewired with latest technology, new or rebuilt traction motors, rebuilt trucks, probably new prime movers and main generator/alternator, rebuilt air brakes - at about 1/2 the cost of a new unit.

More EMDs are rbuilt than GEs.
